Ruth Mazo Karras is Professor of History at the University of Minnesota. She has published widely on the history of women, gender, and sexuality in the Middle Ages. Her books include Unmarriages: Women, Men, and Sexual Unions in the Middle Ages (2012), From Boys to Men: Formations of Masculinity in Late Medieval Europe (2002), Common Women: Prostitution and Sexuality in Medieval England (1998) and Slavery and Society in Medieval Scandinavia (1988). Simple campaign rules allow multiple scenarios to be played in sequence and permit warbands to develop over time. An appendix is also included to provide brief rules for supernatural creatures of the period - monsters, demons, revenants and witches - and new abilities and equipment to fight them, making En Garde! the perfect ruleset for gamers who want something a bit different from the norm.

En Garde! is a small-scale skirmish game based on the successful Ronin rules, in which small groups of warriors fight each other for honour or riches. Rather than just rolling a few dice, the rules allow players to make tactical decisions about how the models that they control will fight - offensively, defensively, or by applying special skills and abilities. En Garde! covers the conflicts of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, when black-powder weapons started to become common in battle but martial prowess still determined the outcome.

Play as Border Reivers, Conquistadors, Landsknechts, Aztecs, French Musketeers, Caribbean Pirates and many more, in scenarios that evoke classic engagements of the genre. Sub-plots (secondary objectives for each side) have also been introduced, making gameplay even more varied and exciting. Simple campaign rules allow multiple scenarios to be played in sequence and permit warbands to develop over time. An appendix is also included to provide brief rules for supernatural creatures of the period - monsters, demons, revenants and witches - and new abilities and equipment to fight them, making En Garde! the perfect ruleset for gamers who want something a bit different from the norm.

Loved the book. After many years layoff of playing this book was a real delight and joy. It has helped me some in my game, but age has caught up with me and I now see the ball sailing overhead and I am not moving as fast as before! Really weird! But it is great to teach youngsters the game, and the book is tops for any squash player. Have given it as a gift to several.

I had been toiling in low-level/beginner squash for a year until I bought and read this book. My game saw huge gains after reading this book. Many ideas, basic shots and strategies are summed up in simple, succinct points. I can not compare this book to other squash instructional books as this is the first that I read but for me the proof is in the pudding. I credit this book with being a major factor in breaking me out of the beginner game and propelling me into the ranks of competitive squash. I was playing hack-ball beforehand and afterwards had a far better understanding of basic stroke, hitting for length and basic strategy. The 8 drills that are detailed are good, my only complaint being that they could have included a few more. Bottom line: Invaluable resource for beginners.

This is, regrettably, a quick makeover of a good book on hardball squash into barely acceptable book on softball squash. For the beginner, it would be a confusing mixture of the two. For an observer, some of the quotes from pros are revealing as to the gaps between the softball and hardball traditions remaining in the USA. For a more complete guide to the game, get "Squash Workshop" by Ian Mackenzie ... or get "Learn Squash in a Weekend" for a brief but technically accurate guide. - Ron Beck, publisher squashtalk.com
